Agar.io
Agar.io is a free multiplayer video game developed by Matheus Valadares (Zeach). The player controls a colored circle representing a cell whose goal is to grow as much as possible by absorbing smaller cells without being absorbed by larger cells2. The name Agar.io comes from agar-agar, a gelling product used to grow bacteria3.
The game became known at its release on the site 4chan, being initially only available on web browser. It became popular through word of mouth on social media, including YouTube (mainly with Squeezie in France) and Twitch4, and was then released on Steam. On July 8, 2015, the game was released on iOS and Android, edited by Miniclip5,6.
Agar.io was acclaimed by the critics, who praised its simplicity, its competitive aspect and its mechanisms of play. Some publications regretted the repetitiveness of the game and the heaviness of the orders on mobile. The game was compared to Osmos and the Spore cell stage. Agar.io has been very successful on its release. The website agar.io has become, according to Alexa, one of the thousand most visited sites in the world7, and the mobile versions of the game have been downloaded more than ten million times during the week of their release. Agar.io is also a team game where you can ally with other people in the Team mode, or in the FFA (Free for All) mode. On Play Store, the game has seen more than 50 million downloads.
